Luxury and sustainability come together

Reco Jeans make us dance!

There are a huge number of voices in the blogosphere talking about topics right up our alley. One of my favorite postings that I came across this week comes to us from Changing Clothing, the eco blog of Reco Jeans, an up-and-coming eco-fashion company that has introduced “a green line of denim that minimizes the use of fresh cotton and reduces the amount of excess fabric that would end up in a landfill.” (Sound familiar?)

These guys are making terrific looking jeans and contributing to a healthier, cleaner and more dignified earth. We love that!

Check out what they have to say about luxury and sustainability. As we have come to believe, they are not as diametrically opposed as one might think.  Investing in quality is not exclusively a status-related choice, but can be one that prevents the necessity of replacement. Can we start shopping with long-term intentions?

The fashion world would never be the same.

Model T Classic bringin' the news

We want to share some of your stories this week. We’ve asked some of our customers to let us know how their English Retreads bags are making their lives a little better, a little easier and way more stylish. We thought we’d post two of our favorite submissions in the hopes that it might inspire you to send in your photos and stories.

Our bags are being used to deliver the news! Up in Livingston Montana the local paper is making the rounds in one of our Classic Totes. This looks like a job for a sturdy bag—and our unlined bags are just the ticket!

Who's got the most stylish diaper bag in town?

And Katie, who lives in Maine, has got to be the most stylish mom in town using our Large Beetle as a diaper bag. I guess that having a bag that’s super easy to clean and roomy enough to hold all the necessities makes it the perfect bag for the job.

Katie and Elea, thanks for sending in the photos.

We’d love to hear from you about the who, when and where of what your bag is up to. Send your submissions to info(at)englishretreads(dot)com.

A girl can dream (in green!)

Monday, March 16th, 2009

So even in this recession, there are still some fabulous eco-fashions that I just HAVE to own. I am proud of myself for keeping some of those pieces in my dreams, but others are just too great not to have (like an English Retreads tote).

My closet is full of jeans, jeans, and more jeans. Half of them are two sizes too small, but I love them too much to throw away. Hey I will fit into them again soon, right? My latest obsession is with Del Forte‘s amazing organic cotton denim. That Eugenia skinny jean is the pant that you can dress up for a night out, or wear with a cotton v-neck and sandals. I love/want/need them.

Calleen Cordero shoes are amaaaazing!

I seem to always have a difficult time finding really stylish shoes that don’t have that overly earthy hippy look to them. Now I love my Toms, but for a night out with my girlfriends, I am always looking for a something special to dress up my denim. That leads me to Calleen Cordero. She isn’t fully “environmentally friendly,” but this North Hollywood designer creates beautiful locally handmade shoes that feature really interesting vegetable dyed leather. Cordero uses reclaimed leather and claims that “you can bury [her] shoes, and it will biodegrade.” That’s pretty cool in my book. I can’t get over the stunning gold color of her “Cleo Met” sandals. At $339.00, these shoes are probably going to stay in my dreams forever.

I’ve blogged about Larsen Gray before, and that’s because her stuff is beautiful. This is a designer that knows how to seamlessly blend environmentally friendly fabrics with high-fashion design. Eco-chic is taken to a whole new level with this simple, yet glamorous tiered tank.

I would top off this entire look with none other than an English Retreads handbag! The Model T Tote Luxe lined in Jet would be my choice. Simple, fashionable, timeless, and 100% vegan. So there you have it, my dream eco-outfit of the day. I would love to know what all you eco-fashionistas are lusting over this spring.

Why didn’t Oscar go green?

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

So I started watching Oscar coverage at 3 p.m. yesterday. Yes, that is 3 and a half hours before the actual show even started; I am very aware that I may be celebrity obsessed. As the E! News crew covered everything from Anne Hathaway’s favorite snack to Jay Manuel’s runway walk to Ryan Seacrest’s interest in fashion, I was struck by the lack of environmentally focused pieces.

These days, “going green” in Hollywood is just as hot as the ever-popular grapefruit diet or 105 degree yoga. I expected that when all eyes are on Hollywood, celebrities and the Academy would take a bigger stand towards environmental causes that are so relevant to all of us.

Granted, there were the stars such as Meryl Streep (love her!) who showed up in a 2010 solar-powered Prius and even more celebs who attended the pre-Oscar Global Green Bash. What I would’ve loved to see was an adored name such as Angelina Jolie rockin’ an organic fabric Stella McCartney gown. Or Leonardo DiCaprio (a celebrity eco-god) with some sort of “environmental” ribbon fastened to his tux as a major conversation piece.

The show’s effort to decrease their environmental impact seemed less stellar than Jessica Biel’s understated and sloppy dress. Let’s hope this recession goes away soon and we can get back to other equally important causes in the future.
