Oh, Adrian!

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Eco-fashion is not our only love here at English Retreads, there’s also Adrian Grenier. Need I say more? But I want to so I will. I mean, those green eyes say it all, yes? NO! His eco actions say most of it, and his striking green eyes paired with those lovely, thick, dark, luscious, come-hither locks say the rest.

Adrian was the first star I’ve seen in real life who I actually recognized (besides Phil Collins, but that doesn’t count). Let me take myself back… it started off as a frigid afternoon in Park City, UT during the winter of 2007 Sundance Film Festival and I was in some fancy eco lounge place. All of a sudden things warmed up and I felt a tinging sensation in my toes, so I gracefully looked up in slow motion and there he was. Oh, Adrian. At that juncture of my life I had seen exactly 1/2 of one episode of Entourage, plus I have Prosopagnosia, so it was a big deal that I recognized somebody, even Adrian.

Adrian uses his star power to bring to light how easy it is to be green (contrary to what Kermit the Frog says), now that’s eco-fabulous. Take for example Planet Green’s Alter Eco, THE eco lifestyle and makeover series. Think DIY channel immersed in green…sustainable, LEED, roof sealant made from recycled tires, reclaimed hardwood. Furthermore, Adrian and film producer Peter Glatzer founded SHFT, touted as, “A new media platform offering original video series, curated shopping, and a host of resources that speak to a modern, inspirational, eco-conscious lifestyle.” Yes!

As if Adrian doesn’t already have enough going on, he’s also an outspoken supporter and host of fundraising events for the organization charity:water which brings clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Now this is a guy you can bring home to mom, especially if your mom is Rachel Carson or Julia Butterfly Hill.

Who knew being green could be so sexy? Actually we did.

What is “Eco”, anyway?

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

…or what do we mean by it these days? A definition from the World Dictionary is; “A combining form representing ecology in the formation of compounds (ecosystem; ecotype); also with the more general sense “environment,” “nature,” “natural habitat”. Yeah, so? So, what I mean by eco is sustainable, green, environmentally friendly, you know… reduce first and foremost, then reuse, and recycle as a last resort.

I aspire to be one sassy, eco-savvy, walk my talk, not too judgmental, coolio sista!  So I’m going start blogging once per month about my eco-endeavors in hopes of keeping myself on the path and perhaps inspiring someone else along the way…or not. I’ll share one simple thing that can be done each month that I believe will help our fabulous Mother Earth which, in effect, helps us!  Woot-woot, love the win-win sitchies!

OK, so what exactly can be done to become more “eco” without completely and utterly changing our lives in such a way that makes our lives more difficult to live right now, in other words how can we ease into it gracefully? Well, lots. Start by being conscious. If you are going to buy a bottle of water and then throw the empty plastic bottle into the garbage, be conscious of what you’re doing. The next time you might decide to save the bottle until you can recycle it, and the time after that you might remember to bring your own fabulous, reusable water bottle. Yee-haw, now we’re startin’ to live sustainably!

I’m going to suggest options that allow us to reduce- reduce the amount of stuff we use, reduce our carbon footprint, reduce how we might be living our lives in a non sustainable way. So, this month let’s do something fun and easy during the summer months, like ride our bikes! In effect we can reduce the amount we drive our cars. There are options, people…ride a bike, take public transportation, work from home (this is a great excuse to use that new fangled modern technology), walk, skateboard, and fill up all of the seats when you carpool. Think of all you’ll save instead of  paying $3.699 per gallon at the pump, and that’s not even  the real cost of gas. The real cost would be closer to $15.00 per gallon when you factor in costs such as the environmental, climate, health, and security cost of gas coming from Saudi Arabia to our gas tanks in America.

This month I will drive my car 50% less than I have been in the past several months. Last year, when I lived a lot closer to town and my office, I would go weeks without using my car, happily and without thought. Now I need to get myself back in the habit, that’s all. With all of the amazing bike paths in Boulder it’s really more fun and easy to ride than drive. I get to look around and enjoy my commute and with parking factored in it takes about the same amount of time as driving a car. I even bought a bike pannier (hmm, my next English Retreads design?) and a basket so I don’t have any excuses about stopping by the farmers market or grocery store on my way home. Loving it!

What is your goal to become more “eco” this month??

So you want your belt to make a statement…

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

…but did you think that it might make you make one? We tend to say some version of: “oooh” and “ahhh.”

At bare minimum, a belt should hold up your pants. We think that it should also be vegan, recycled and made in the U.S. And now, if we are imagining my dream belt it would also be, in a word, bitchin’.

English Retreads has two awesome belts that fit that criteria: the Fan belt and the Seat belt. The Fan belt is dark, understated, classic, and hands down the most deliciously comfortable belt I’ve ever sucked my gut in for. The Seat belt is cool and colorful and a great design equally worthy of sporting your prize rodeo buckle. But don’t take my word for it, check out what Erika over at Fancy Green has to say about it.

The Fan Belt

The Fan Belt is definitely my favorite. I like to think of it as a boyfriend belt. Sort of like the slouchy jeans that crossed gender lines last season because they are so effortlessly cool. This belt looks like it could be your brother’s but it is made to fit you.  The belts are made of recycled rubber inner tubes from trucks which is a sturdy but flexible material that has some give. Which as it turns out, is a fantastic thing in a belt.  Mine hugs my hips but never pinches as other belts do when I bust out one of my informal daily yoga moves like streeeeetching to grab the sheet of paper from the printer or reeeeaeaching to grab my phone out of my bag, which always seems meander five feet away from my office chair.

The back panel of the belt is almost always cut from a piece of the tube that has markings, to guarantee a one-of-a-kind belt sure to get you some attention. Mine has a mysterious sequence of numbers and in the corner, which I find awesome.

The belts are sold with a classic buckle or a choice of some great specialty buckles. Any buckles can be swapped by unsnapping the two snaps near the buckle end and replacing the buckle with another of your choice. Over the years we have been contacted by some terrific artists who make belt buckles and many of them sell our belts as their vegan belt option. Which is pretty cool.

Here are some of my favorite buckles out there in the universe of online shopping.

Model T Classic bringin' the news

We want to share some of your stories this week. We’ve asked some of our customers to let us know how their English Retreads bags are making their lives a little better, a little easier and way more stylish. We thought we’d post two of our favorite submissions in the hopes that it might inspire you to send in your photos and stories.

Our bags are being used to deliver the news! Up in Livingston Montana the local paper is making the rounds in one of our Classic Totes. This looks like a job for a sturdy bag—and our unlined bags are just the ticket!

Who's got the most stylish diaper bag in town?

And Katie, who lives in Maine, has got to be the most stylish mom in town using our Large Beetle as a diaper bag. I guess that having a bag that’s super easy to clean and roomy enough to hold all the necessities makes it the perfect bag for the job.

Katie and Elea, thanks for sending in the photos.

We’d love to hear from you about the who, when and where of what your bag is up to. Send your submissions to info(at)englishretreads(dot)com.

Challenging the music industry to be greener

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

The biggest craze in Hollywood these days is the “green” movement. But which musical artists are really helping out?

Jack Johnson rocks!

  1. Dave Matthews Band: offsets their CO2 emissions from their multi-city tours by funding tree plantings and wind turbine construction projects
  2. Sting: founded the Rainforest Foundation to protect rain forests and their indigenous people in 1989
  3. Kt Tunstall: ran her U.S. tour bus on biodiesel fuel and performed at eco-friendly “Golden Green” at the 2007 Golden Globeawards in Los Angeles
  4. Pearl Jam: donated $100,000 to nine organizations working on climate change, renewable energy and other green causes
  5. Jack Johnson: co-founded the Kokua Hawaii Foundation, a nonprofit that supports environmental education in schools and communities of Hawaii

Also, check out the Green Music Alliance, an organization focused on reducing the carbon footprint of the music industry.

Love music that loves the environment.

Showing love for my favorite hybrid car, the Prius

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

While the RTD system may be quite remarkable here in Boulder, there are times when a car is necessary to get around. But why choose a gas-guzzling SUV when there are other more eco-friendly options? And things have just gotten better!

Insanely amazing.

Yes, I am indeed talking about the Toyota Prius. Even just from its solar powered ventilation system, the 2010 Toyota Prius seems to be the ultimate car.

Although it’s known for its insane gas mileage (for those of you who don’t know, it’s about 51mph/gallon!), I was still impressed by its many other features, such as the recycled plastics that are used on the interior parts of the car. Or the use of the engine, electric motor and battery. I am in awe of car companies that are doing their small part to lessen their environmental impact.

The interactive Prius website covers all of the details.

Eight years calls for a time to celebrate!

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

June is an exciting month for us as it marks English Retreads’ 8th Birthday (and my first month as the new intern)! That is eight solid years of creating eco-fashion handbags and accessories. For those of you who may not know the whole story of English Retreads, I will start from the beginning.

Like many other Boulderites, Heather English spent one warm summer afternoon tubing down Boulder Creek. While many of us would use this time to relax and escape, Heather’s mind was busy at work on a new business idea. The inner tube, yet simple, could be turned into something so fabulous. While in search of a new handbag that was durable and not made from leather, the idea came to her to create her own. And what better material to use than the same inner tube that she was floating down Boulder Creek on?

After a stop at the local hardware store, Heather created her very own bag. Soon her friends began asking about it and when the requests started rolling in, she knew she was in business. Voila! English Retreads was born.

Being the new intern for English Retreads, I have been busy learning more about this company each day. It is amazing to think how a simple object can be transformed into an eco-friendly yet fashionable item. Just think of how far just one bag has traveled in its lifetime. So just keep addin’ on the miles and experiences to both your life and the life of your English Retreads bag!

Happy 8th Birthday to English Retreads! To continue the celebrations, take advantage of 20% off your next purchase. Enter the code “eris8” when checking out. But hurry, the discount only lasts until June 30, 2009!

Dishin’ out some serious goodness

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Boulder is full of the coolest small businesses. My latest find (which has become a Boulder obsession) is The Organic Dish. The concept for The Organic Dish is so simple: they create healthy, flavorful, ready-to-cook organic meals that can be enjoyed by all. I will be the first one to reveal that I am a horrible cook (easy mac is my specialty), so meals from The Organic Dish are a miracle replacement to the less-than-stellar, eco-unfriendly Lean Cuisines I have been known to consume.

Beckie Hemmerling of The Organic Dish was kind enough to give us English Retreads girls a complimentary meal that I would have never picked for myself, yet ended up absolutely loving. Who knew red lentils with coconut could be so flavorfully delicious and easy? The dish is described as “red lentils cooked in coconut milk, spinach, veggie broth and a variety of spices, and served over brown Basmati rice. Simple and delicious!” It is also one of their most popular dishes and now I know why. Yum.

Environmentally-conscious folks are usually (and rightfully) weary of delivery or prepackaged meals due to the amount of waste they create. The Organic Dish is currently working with Eco-Cycle to eventually achieve zero waste through their recycling, composting and sustainable purchasing habits. Also helping to boost their eco-status is the fact that they source some of their produce locally and actively work to support our local Boulder/Denver economy. Awesome company.

Oh! And one more thing that I find so commendable about this company is their Good Food Accounts which are designed to help out people during a time of hardship or life transition, such as going through an illness or having a baby. Friends, families and colleagues can go onto the page and donate any amount of money, which will go towards meals, to help that person through their transition. I think this is the perfect way to reach out to someone in a time of need.

Next time you are in a time crunch for dinner, don’t feel like cooking, or burned another casserole, give The Organic Dish a call and you will have an amazing meal at your fingertips. If it sounds like I’m raving, it’s because I am; this company could save my poor kitchen.

Food is Good,
